Update note

Wow, it’s been almost 2 years since I used this product to whiten my teeth. My BF was suggesting to me that I might think about doing it again, however, I disagree. A stranger passed me in the elevator the other day and commented on how white my teeth were and nice liking. So, there you go. I haven’t whitened them since, but I do use various brands of Whitening toothpaste.

I tried Crest Whitestrips about two months ago. I drink lots of coffee and my teeth, which were not THAT yellow, were starting to look a little stained so I thought I would give this product a try. I do not smoke or drink a lot of sodas. I can notice that my front teeth are whiter, so I do believe the product works to whiten your teeth, but I think the advertisements are a slight bit misleading and I’ll try to explain below.

I bought them at my local Target for $26 (w/o tax). It may have been a special sale (this was the first time I saw them, they were on an end-cap, so consider it impulse buy).

How to use

The product comes with instructions (English and Spanish) in a fold out brochure, with beautiful smiling models (who have very white teeth and seem very happy about this).

-You get 28 strips: 14 for top teeth, 14 for bottom teeth

(This is the premium product, 28 of these = 56 of the Crest Original Whitestrips brand)

-It comes in a plastic “box” that flips open and has a mirror on the top flap (lots of plastic and materials for a small product). The mirror I suppose comes in handy if you’re not near a bathroom.

-The strips come in individual foil wraps that you tear to open.

-You peel the strips off of a plastic film-like material or a “backing liner” that has the same whitening forumla on it in a “border material”.

-You align them w/your gumline and then fold the bottom of the strip underneath your teeth to hold in place.

-You do each strip for 30 minutes.

-They suggest then if you do it twice a day for both the bottom and the top then you can be done in 7 days.

-The instructions suggest not to smoke, drink, eat or sleep while wearing them.

-They suggest you avoid contact with cloth, leather or fabric.

-They have a 60-day Satisfaction guaranteed and will refund your purchase.

But then they say “for only 30 minutes” — and suggest (as I did) do the tops and bottom separately (1 hour) twice a day = 2 hours a day to complete in 7 days. Math makes it more realistic then the simple sounding marketing story “Remove up to 14 years of stain build-up in just 7 days”.

The Skinny on the Strips…

The top strips are longer and not curved, more like a long rectangle. Despite them being longer, they only covered 6 teeth fully and half of my 1st bicuspids (the fourth tooth in from my incisor). You can kinda see these teeth when I smile so this was a huge disappointment that the top strip didn’t cover more teeth. The model in the photo clearly has whiter teeth in the back positions. I would consider my top teeth average size — maybe wider than most and definitely not “long in the tooth”.

The bottom strip is much smaller — in fact it too only covered about 8 of my bottom teeth. I have VERY tiny bottom teeth so I would be surprised if people w/larger bottom teeth didn’t have less coverage.

After peeling the strips off of the backing material, you may get white stuff on your fingers. The instructions mention this as normal and suggest washing your hands right away (which I did and it does wash away easily).

I was also worried about the teeth that “sort of” got covered — I can’t notice a line or half-whiteness on those so not that bad. The strips are removed from the film which is covered with the whitening strip material. I mention this because the bottom strip still had a lot of valuable real estate on the film that you discard! I thought what a waste — they could have made the bottom strip longer. There is a note on the instructions: “It is normal for border material to be left behind backing liner after peeling strip. The border material protects the strip until you are ready to use it.”

Discomfort, Irritability, and pain ???

Some, but not blinding discomfort. It’s a bit of a nuisance to have them on, but after the first two times you sort of forget you’ve got them on your teeth. I found it difficult to talk somewhat because saliva would build up, but mostly b/c I was afraid too much mouth movement would bunch the strips up. So I probably wouldn’t recommend doing it at work if you have to communicate verbally to other human beings.

At times I would feel sharp pings while doing the top teeth, but then it wouldn’t last or return. After doing about 3 treatments, my teeth definitely were VERY SENSITIVE. It didn’t feel like gum sensitivity, but my teeth. It wasn’t chronic, just for a short period (an hour or so) after doing my nightly treatment. Maybe it was an effect of the gums, but it’s like when you drink something too cold if you’ve ever experienced that feeling. This is why I cut back a little bit on doing them every night. I would say it took me about two and a half weeks to complete the treatments.

Whitening factor

I still couldn’t tell if it was working around the 4th treatment, but somewhere near the 6th or 7th, my teeth started to appear whiter. My teeth are not nearly as white as the model in the pictures on the instructional brochure. No way! — and I wasn’t starting with terribly stained, yellow teeth either. So, while my teeth are whiter and they look nicer, I’m not blown away by their whiter-ness. My boyfriend definitely noticed the difference so that’s an added belief that I do have whiter teeth and it is not psychology. ;)

Based on my experience, I would recommend them if you want to see some whiteness. I don’t know anyone else personally who has tried them, too. I suppose I would also recommend them to save money from going to the dentist to have your teeth whitened, but, if my teeth had been more stained or yellow I wonder how much whiter they would seem and if going to the dentist wouldn’t just be better to get truly whitened teeth. This is why my rating is “average” — I wasn’t terribly impressed or dissatisfied.
