OK. After my negative experience with Crest Night Effects, I was a little dubious about trying another teeth whitening product, much less one made by Crest. However, I gave Crest Whitestrips a shot. This is a product that, at the time, guaranteed whiter teeth in 14 days and was supposed to last for 6 months. I used it twice, both times after getting my regular 6-month dental checkup for what I believed to be maximum effect, and was satisfied with the overall results. My teeth were noticeably whiter.

When another 6 months had passed, I noticed another Crest product on the shelf. This was the Crest Whitestrips Premium. It cost a little more (though recently they have been the same price at my local supermarket) but guaranteed whiter teeth in only 7 days and claimed to last for 12 months. (Nowadays, Crest Whitestrips makes a similar 12-month claim on the effectiveness of its product.) Well, I figured I couldn’t lose trying out Crest Whitestrips Premium, especially if I would see results in half the time and not have to buy it again for a full year.

The directions for Crest Whitestrips Premium are the same as its predecessor. You are given a set of strips for your upper and lower teeth that you must wear for 30 minutes. You can wear them any time of day and even apply the 30 minutes back to back. For full effectiveness, you should wear them twice a day. Therefore, in the Crest Whitestrips Premium container, there are a total of 28 strips— 14 for the upper teeth and 14 for the lower teeth. The strips are labeled and colour-coded to indicate on what group of your choppers they should be applied.

The packaging of the Premium product is nice. Unlike Crest Whitestrips where the strips are loosely divided in a cardboard box, the Premium comes in a blue, plastic container. Pop open the top to reveal a small mirror attached inside. This is great for people on the go or if you want to take the whole pack with you on a trip.

To apply a strip to your teeth, first remove the strip from its individually wrapped packet. The strip looks like a dental bite attached to a rectangular field of goo. This goo is the adhesive that sticks to your teeth. Simply peel the strip off of its rectangular-shaped home and apply it goo side toward your teeth. I found it best if you place it over the outer side of your teeth and then fold it over until it sticks to the inner side. Lining the strip to your teeth might be a little tricky at first, but the goo is not so sticky that you can’t slide the strip around a bit until you have the best fit for it. Repeat the process so that you have strips on both the upper and lower teeth.

I was a little surprised to read how some people experienced sensitivity after using the Whitestrips, as I never had any problems with my teeth or gums when using them. But I did have a problem with using them on my upper and lower teeth at the same time. For some reason I never felt comfortable having both sets of teeth wrapped up.

Now, I could have put in 30 minutes four times a day in order to get both my upper and lower teeth whitened during the same time interval. But I found that investing 2 hours on my choppers was too time consuming. I mean, I could find 30 minutes in the morning during my commute to wear them, but another 30 minutes would have to come during work hours, and I guess I am self-conscious about wearing them at work. (I actually wear them for up to an hour at a time even though the instructions state that wearing them for more than 30 minutes won’t improve your results.) My compromise has been to wear one set until my supply is gone, then switch over to the next set. Therefore, the 14-day strips took me 28 days to go through, while this 7-day product takes me 14 days.

Another problem I have with the strips is that the bottom strips sometimes slip off my teeth before the 30 minutes are up. Some of this might be due to saliva or involuntary movements of my tongue. But the strips are thin and can be pushed out of place by something as easy as pursing your lips. In any case, the process of whitening the lower teeth can be frustrating, and I don’t feel I am getting the best results for my bottom teeth. On the other hand, I have no trouble fitting the strips on my upper teeth.

So, does Crest Whitestrips Premium really work? Well, yes and no. Yes in that it does whiten my upper teeth. I like that since those are the teeth that show when I smile. My experience with my lower teeth has not been as good, as I explained earlier. Overall, my teeth were whitened just as much using the 7-day Premium as they were with the 14-day regular Whitestrips.

However, I do not feel that the whiteness lasts the advertised 12 months. As I said in the beginning, I first tried Crest Whitestrips when it advertised a 6-month period of effectiveness. And so it seems of the Premium version; after 6 months I started to notice my teeth turning yellow. I didn’t want to gamble on what my teeth would look like after another 6 months, so I purchased another box of Crest Whitestrips Premium. So, I say that the product works for half as long as they guarantee, which was as long as the old product worked.

In conclusion, this product isn’t without its flaws. But it is cheaper than professional work. If you want a quick whitening fix for your teeth, give it a try. However, don’t expect it to be a one-time miracle worker.
